A conversation to answer questions and identify any concerns
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists or ACOG recommends that Pap smear testing begin within three years of sexual intercourse, or by age 21. Even young women who have not become sexually active need to visit a gynecologist by age 21. The ACOG further recommends yearly Pap smears until age 30 when healthy women who have had at least three consecutive normal Pap smears may begin to have the test every two or three years, or as often as their gynecologists suggest.
You should always see your gynecologist if you experience:
Any unusually and/ or persistent vaginal discharge
Bleeding between periods
Bleeding after sexual intercourse
While a yearly Pap smear is not always necessary after age 30, all women still require an annual pelvic exam to check for any other changes or infections. If you've had an HPV test that was negative that doesn't mean you don't need to have a yearly pelvic exam. The ACOG established these guidelines with full knowledge that HPV causes cervical cancer.
Did you know that with each new sexual partner your risk of getting HPV increases by 15 percent? This means that having multiple sex partners raises your risk of HPV substantially. According to the ACOG guidelines for Pap testing women diagnosed with HIV or other diseases or conditions that lower immunity should continue having annual Pap smears after age 30.
Fact: The greatest single reason for the occurrence of cervical cancer is not having Pap smears according to recommended guidelines.
The majority of women diagnosed with cervical cancer have not had a Pap smear in five or more years. Sadly, these women are usually at an advanced stage of cancer when they receive diagnosis.
To help you remember to schedule your regular screening tests and blood donations, the College of American Pathologists encourages you to sign up for an e-mail reminder today. You can choose any date you like, and a message will be sent to the e-mail address you specify reminding you to schedule your screening test.

Tips for a More Accurate Pap Smear
It is not recommended to plan your Pap smear appointment during a period. Menstrual fluid and blood may make it difficult for the pathologist to interpret results. However, if the flow is light, some doctors will perform a Pap smear. Newer, liquid-based Pap smears can separate cervical cells from mucus and blood, allowing a more accurate reading. It is suggested to have a Pap smear between 10 and 20 days after your period.
Please contact our office to inform him us your Pap smear will coincide with your period. You may be asked to reschedule, or be told to keep your appointment. In that case, the doctor will most likely check to see if the flow is light enough to proceed with the test.
Follow these simple steps to receive the most accurate Pap smear results at your annual visit to the gynecologist.
Tell your doctor about any discharge, itching, or symptoms you may be experiencing before the Pap smear. Your doctor may want to prescribe medication to clear any infection you may have. Infections can sometimes cause the Pap smear results to come back as abnormal.
Do not have a Pap smear during your period.
Avoid sex 24-48 hours prior to to the Pap smear.
No douching, tampons, deodorant sprays, feminine washes 48 hours prior to the pap smear. Good rule of thumb is nothing in the vagina. This means vaginal creams, as well.
Pap Smear Results by Telephone
Pap Smear results will now be available by telephone two weeks after your appointment. If you have an abnormal result, the system will tell you to contact the office. For most abnormal results, the office will already have your results and have contacted you.
This system is just an additional safe-guard to make sure that nothing is overlooked.
